ASK A TAILOR: SUIT STYLES, FABRICS, TERMS AND MORE - MenSuits

Tailoring is Important for Suit Fit and Confidence

The perfect suit has the power to transform your emotions. It can boost your confidence and help you handle the tough situations you face every day. This includes important presentations and big events.

To achieve the ideal fit and style for your suit, it's essential to have a reliable tailor by your side. Whether you need a custom suit or help with a recent purchase, a skilled tailor is important. They can turn a good suit into an exceptional one.

Q&A with Master Tailor Manny

suit tailoring can help you look your best

Suit tailoring is important for a man to look and feel great. We asked one of our favorite tailors in Chattanooga, Tennessee, for help. His name is Manny, and he is a master of his craft. Manny’s got 40+ years of experience and is ready to be your new tailoring Yoda.

Q: What style of suit should I ask for?

A: In short, it’s all about you, really. The answer to this one should stem from a combination of independent research and personal preference.

Since many factors affect your ideal suit, it's best to understand your style and comfort level clearly.

Questions to ask yourself:
  • What are your needs? Is this a week-to-week workhorse or a special occasion suit
  • Are you looking to push the limits in terms of style or just go with something simple and timeless?
Pro tip:

A good way to break the ice with any tailor is by providing a photo or two of what you’re looking for most in a suit. You might have liked an Italian-cut suit with wide lapels from a magazine. Or maybe you prefer an American-cut, two-button suit from your favorite TV show.

Any visual examples will go a long way in finding a suit that works best for you. From there, don’t be afraid to solicit my advice. I’ve seen a thing or two in my day and know what works and what doesn’t.

Q: What's the difference between tailored, bespoke, and made-to-measure?
A: Simply put, it’s a matter of varying degrees of personalization and customization.

Tailored Suits

To get a tailored suit, you usually start with a ready-to-wear or off-the-rack suit. Then, take it to a tailor or alteration shop. They can make small changes like adding cuffs, shortening hems, or taking in the waist.

Even if that suit looks great on you, I can make it look even better with a few simple changes. You and the suit deserve the best.

Made-to-Measure Suit

Made-to-measure suits begin with a standard pattern. We then change this pattern to fit your body type and shape using your measurements. From there, you can choose which fabrics and details you want. Most suit makers also use a combination of hand and machine sewing during the process.

Every man should enjoy the experience of a made-to-measure suit. Whether you need a tough fit or a unique pattern, this is the way to go.

Bespoke Suits

A bespoke suit is like being able to customize a Ferrari. You can carefully mull over every detail to create a truly custom suit. We take measurements and create full, custom patterns from scratch, specifically based on your measurements.

Bespoke suits are a more expensive choice. They need many fittings and take a long time to make. Usually, they cost thousands of dollars, often up to $10,000 or more. These suits are made entirely by hand.

Q: Is the type of fabric really that important?
A: Short answer: yes. The weight and type of fabric you choose can greatly affect when and where you’ll be able to wear the suit.

Fall and Winter Suits

A good rule is that heavier weights make warmer suits. Fabrics like wool, flannel, and tweed are best for fall and winter suits.

Spring and Summer Suits

Lighter fabrics like cotton, linen, and seersucker are better for spring and summer.

Year-Round Suits

If you’re looking for something for year-round wear, a midweight or “tropical” wool is a great option. From there, consider your different weave options.

Special weaves like birdseye, herringbone, and hopsack can add visual depth to your suit. They also provide great texture. This can transform a plain, solid-colored suit into something truly special.
